Do countries still burn tires?

Yes. In fact, according the the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) the United States burnt 52% of all tires collected in 2005 for fuel; Europe burned 31% of their old tires. The reason tire burning is ongoing is because a single tire delivers 25 times more energy than the same amount of coal, and it also produces emissions about the same as those from coal. This combined with the fact that tires are notoriously difficult to recycle and extremely abundant means that there are few viable options for recycling and reusing the growing number of old tires short of incineration. Another method for recycling tires includes shredding them for use in road and playground construction.
