Yes, cats use their whiskers as their sense of touch. The whiskers are sensitive enough to detect a change in breeze direction. They are used primarily to tell a cat whether or not he can fit through an opening or to move around at night. There are additional similar hairs on a cat’s chin, eyebrows and behind their forelegs. These hairs also function to communicate the cat’s mood.
A cat’s whiskers are essential to its sense of balance, and also help a cat measure an opening through which it wants to pass through. Without whiskers, and cat would in a very real sense be disabled.
