The common carp, found throughout North America, is primarily an omnivore. It eats mostly aquatic plants, but also occasionally dines on small fish, crustaceans and insects. Since they can eat a large assortment of food. carp are essential to help keep ecological communities healthy by keeping populations in check. I have heard though that habitats with carp in them tend to have cleaner water, but I’m not sure if they have anything to do with it directly. It could be a by-product of a healthy environment.
