Do cannabis plants help the environment?

It has been suggested that the growing of both cannabis and hemp would help remove some of the excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, since the plants photosynthesize. Additionally, it may also be possible that hemp can be used to produce methanol and ethanol, alternative fuel sources for vehicles. Finally, paper can be made from hemp, which would save trees and ease the pressures of deforestation.
