Do butterflies have longer life spans than flies?

This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on what type of butterfly and what type of fly we are comparing. There are about 18,000 different fly species in the world and about 20,000 different species of butterfly, and each different species will have it’s own life expectnacy. For example, a certain species of butterfly has been known to have a life expectancy of about two days, while another species (the morning cloak and other species) have been known to live almost a year after becoming a butterfly. The same thing goes for the different types of flies. A horse fly would have a very different lifespan than a house fly. House flies typically live two to four weeks while horse flies can live up to three months. It would seem that butterflies may have longer life spans on average, but it would really depend on which exact species you are comparing.

On average, butterflies live longer than flies. For example, the Monarch butterfly lives an average of 6-8 months. The common house fly lives about 15-30 days.
