Businesses first and foremost are concerned with profit, as a general rule.
Some genuinely care about ethics, and they act ethically, but the majority tend not to, as it’s easier to conduct business that way.
Nowadays, companies develop a written code of ethics for the employees to follow. Some code of ethics developed because of government regulations, consumer demand, supply chain management and human issues such as human trafficking, bribery and child labor. If a company have a sustainability plan, which most do today, a code of conduct is used and all stakeholders have to acknowledge abiding by that code. Companies realize it is also a legal safeguard against vendors or employee that may want to sue.
