do breaks have asbestos in them?

Friction products have and in some cases still do contain asbestos. It does a great job of resisting the heat caused by friction. Brake pad and clutch linings are what we’re talking about here.

Mostly asbestos has been phased out of new application but linings containing it can still be purchased.

The dust that comes out during the use of the linings is dangerous if inhaled into the lungs. It can cause mesothelioma, “Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of cells lining the body’s internal organs, known as the mesothelium.”
