Beef cows are cheaper to raise than dairy cows because they eat mostly grass from grazing lands. Dairy cattle have a more specific, and costly, diet of hay, corn silage (corn plus chopped-up corn plants), soybeans, alfalfa, and protein supplements added to the mix.
