Sand can come from many sources, but mostly it’s made of microscopic bits of rock eroded from landmasses which are carried by rivers to the sea. The color of the sand and the type of rock it is made of depends heavily on the location — for instance, sand in Hawaii comes from volcanic rock. Some sand is not made of rock at all, but washed up bits of broken shells.
