It’s not necessarily that the beetles like smoke. Instead, they *cause* smoke. Beetles attack and kill trees like the Ponderosa pine, which in 2002 displayed “widespread … mortality from bark beetle infestation in the Southwestern region”. Then, the increased number of felled trees increases the risk of forest fires in a region, as well as increasing the fire’s intensity.
