Do barges create water pollution when they run?

According to the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, barges not only create little to no air, water, or noise pollution, but they are also the most energy-efficient mode of goods transport. The cargo capacity of barges is significantly greater than that of a train car (15 times greater) or a semi-trailer truck (60 times greater). Water transport also has a much better safety record than does either rail or road, meaning less likelihood of spillage. Double hulls and navigational aids provide further protection against spillage.
