Do atoms have a positive or negative charge?

An atom in its elemental form does not have any charge because its protons and electrons are balanced. If an atom gains an extra electron it becomes negatively charged. If it loses an electron it becomes positively charged. In both cases the atom is then referred to as an Ion.
