Do any developed countries pay developing ones to preserve their forests and other natural resources, rather than extract and ruin them?

Developed countries to pay developing ones for what are known as offsets. Offsets allow polluters to trade pollution they create for actions or materials that reduce green house gas emissions. So, an energy producer can pay to ensure that a forest that would have been cut down does not get cut down and the carbon those trees remove from the atmosphere can be claimed by the polluter as a justification to pollute by the amount saved.

Critics of offsetting claim that it does does little to prevent global climate change and may actualy be making things worse by distracting the world from taking more effective steps to reduce green house gas emissions.
