Carpenter ants remove wood to build tunnels through trees and lumber in houses. They do not eat it, but the destruction a large colony can cause can be detrimental to buildings. These ants eat honeydew produced by aphids and other insects.
Did you know that ants have been found to “farm” aphids for the honeydew they produce? Ants have been seen to take aphids back to their colony and tend to them, milking them for their honeydew. Ants generally eat things that are high in sugars, which is what can attract them to jams and fruits at picnics.
