Do Americans really waste more food than sub-Saharan Africans eat?

The amount a sub-Sarahan African person eats varies, but its likely: when the amount of food Americans waste is averaged out, it comes to about a pound per day per person. This is about 27% of the total food we produce! Two-thirds of the waste is made up of fresh produce, milk, grain products and sweeteners, and one of the big culprits are ready-made meals at the grocery store, which are thrown out every day if not bought.
