Do American car companies need hybrids to be competitive in the car market?

Yes.  Since 2008, there has been a definite trend among car companies of reducing SUV and large car production, which shows consumers are interested in saving money on has and driving smaller cars.  Every car company is investing in hybrid technology and electric car research and development.  With extensive efforts to increase alternative forms of energy and an emphasis on switching from gasoline to these alternatives, it follows that the auto industry should also be investing in cars that rely on gas less, or not at all.

The success of the Toyota Prius and the excitement over the Chevy Volt shows that the American public is interested and ready for hybrids and electric cars.
