Earthworms can live in the top mineral soil profile since that is where they can have access to the mineral and organic matter for food. Since earthworms are blind, they will typically burrow until they find the necessary and desired food resources. This may be why we tend to see earthworms appear when it has rained recently because the topsoil is wet, moist, and what they would imagine to be filled with organic content.
There are thousands of species of earthworm worldwide, and they exist practically everywhere that there is a hospitable climate.
There are hundreds of types of soils, and certainly not ALL of them contain earthworms, nor anything similar.
