California made headlines when rolling blackouts spread through the northern part of the state. The hour-long outages were rotated in an attempt to prevent total failure of the power grid, which was feared due to increased demand for power especially during peak hours. Many East Coast states have histories of brownouts (drops in power, but not complete blackouts), and it is possible that as energy use continues to rise there may be more in the future.
