Vermont has recently shut down their only nuclear power plant for this reason. There have also been recent leaks in Illinois and New Jersey. The main health hazard in products containing tritium occus when it is inhaled or ingested, since it can’t get past our first layer of skin.
No, the leakage comes from the plants not being built correctly or the owners not caring about the environment. The EPA does not allow plants to let the waste leak into bodys of water because it is poisonous to humans and the animals around the area.
