Yes all plants need some form of light to grow, specifically to achieve photosynthesis. Some form of light is important, because relatively recently scientists discovered that plants can live on the seafloor well away from any sunlight. They can achieve this because of thermal vents in the seafloor that provide both light and heat.
White asparagus is grown by piling soil around the emerging stalk, depriving it of light. The plant cannot produce any chlorophyll and remains white instead of turning green. This is probably the closest a plant can get to growing without light!
