As ants walk they leave a scent trail of pheromones. This scent other ants will follow as it will direct them towards food, water, or their home. When ants find food they will follow their own scent trail home an alert others of food. All different types of ants use this same technique to give direction to the other ants.
Ants produce chemicals called pheromones in their stomachs. The pheromones are emitted through their abdomen as they walk. Ants from the same colony sense these pheromones and follow one another. Other ants from different colonies can sometimes sense other colonies pheromones but only follow it in hopes of finding food. Ants usually do follow in a line and rarely walk off and wonder.
