Do algae blooms cause dead zones?

They definitely can.  When large amounts of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous seep into rivers or oceans, an algal bloom happens.  Algal blooms suck up a lot of the oxygen around them. When the algae die and start decomposing, even more oxygen is sucked up.  Without enough oxygen, marine life will die and thus a dead zone will occur.
