Do active volcanoes always smoke?

What scientists define as “active” volcanoes is somewhat unclear considering that the time frame of how long it has been since a volcano last erupted is not defined. However, one way that scientists define an active volcano is by new gas emissions, which looks like it is smoking. However, that is only one way that they classify an active volcano, and not all active volcanoes are smoking for a period of time prior to eruption, or sometime even at all.
