They don’t really create harmful gases, but most are not properly ventiliated and that creates pockets of deadly gases. Some of these gas pockets can contain methane or carbon dioxide, and they can just displace the oxygen in the mine and we would not be able to tell. There are other hazards to abandoned mines as well such as: open shafts, unstable rock, and toxic chemicals.
