The pesticide companies were in fact incredibly irked by Mrs. Obama’s organic garden. While most of the press was positive, and her intention was an excellent one, many pesticide and agriculture companies were less than pleased. The Mid America CropLife Association complained, “Local and conventional farming is not mutually exclusive. If Americans were still required to farm to support their family’s basic food and fiber needs, would the U.S. have been leaders in the advancement of science, communication, education, medicine, transportation and the arts?” In other words, by growing a garden, Michelle Obama was telling all of America to stop buying any mass-produced food and live out of their backyard. But, despite negative attention, the garden is thriving and during the week of June 4, Michelle Obama reported 80 pounds of produce so far.
