It is impossible to say for sure whether the one shark “knew” what it was doing when it bit into the pregnant female shark, releasing four fully developed babies. The aquariast has stated that the baby sharks would most likely have been eaten by other sharks and rays in the exhibit had they been born at night, as no one knew the shark was pregnant. And while sharks often nip at each other, even when well fed as they are in aquariums, it was noted that this particular wound was perfectly placed so as to allow release of the babies with no harm to the mother. It seems more likely that it was pure coincidence, or that the other shark truly had other nefarious intentions. Sharks are very solitary animals and rarely help each other out in a jam….
