The earliest fossils demonstrating features that we associate with modern humans were found in eastern Africa. At the Omo 1 site in Ethiopia, scientists found a 195,000 year old fossil that demonstrates the earliest example we have of the rounded skull case and projecting chin which is characteristic of modern humans. A 160,000 year-old skull also found in Ethiopia demonstrates another early example of the transition from archaic human characteristics to modern human characteristics.

There is strong evidence that modern humans first populated Asia around 60,000 years ago, but they could have been there as early as 100,000 years ago.
