There are many eyewitness accounts that suggest that animals did have an idea of the imminent tsunami on the morning of December 26, 2004. Dogs were said to have been barking and restless. Elephants were seen to be running to high ground, and even zoo animals refused to leave their shelters. There were less animal deaths recorded in the aftermath than originally suspected. Many animal deaths were because animals were tied up or housed. Animals may have senses that are acute to slight changes in the atmosphere or vibrations, giving them a warning.
