Honda did produce the first hybrid to hit the masses and become popular, yet the Honda Insight was not the first hybrid. The first production hybrid to hit the market was the Toyota Prius in Japan, in 1997.

The Honda Insight was the first hybrid car to hit the mass market in the United States, in 1999. Toyota was the first to market a hybrid car in Japan – the Prius – two years earlier, in 1997. Prior to these vehicles, many other prototypes were created by Audi, GM, various U.S. government agencies, and individuals. But Honda and Toyota were the first to mass-market hybrid vehicles in the U.S. and Japan, respectively.
