Belize did in fact officially place a ban on bottom trawling in all of its territorial waters and its Exclusive Economic Zone on December 31, 2010. The ban makes Belize one of only three countries to permanently prohibit trawling. It is also viewed as a concession to UNESCO, who had threatened to strip the Belize Barrier Reef System of its World Heritage Site status due to the country’s somewhat shoddy environmental practices. Belize still has not shown any sign of banning offshore drilling or the use of gill nets.
