Is the diamond industry bad for the environment?

In a lot of ways, countries that host diamond mining depend upon that industry to survive. There are, however, environmental factors to consider: The chemicals and such that are used in diamond mines simply go into the groundwater, potentially harming anything that will use the water in the future (plants, animals, people). It supports child labor in some countries, and causes civil wars.
