An ecosystem is the community in which organisms and their environment interact. When environmentalists approach an issue from an ecological perspective, this means that they are trying to incorporate natural systems into their solutions. This might mean establishing a wetland to filter out pollutants or excess nutrients from our waste water. Another example is Integrated Pest Management: using natural predators to control pesky insects instead of spraying plants with pesticides. Acknowledging ecosystem services in conservation or restoration encourages the public to see the value in natural processes, and it might even mean less anthropogenic interference in the long run!
