Wegener pointed out that the continents of North and South America line up with the western side of Africa and Europe, like a puzzle piece. When you line up the continents, their mountain ranges also line up. He also noted that the continents were formed mainly out of granitic material, while the ocean floor consisted of mainly basaltic sediments.
There are other facts that support the theory. The north and south poles drift over time, and when you fit the continents back together their polarity lines up. There is till in Africa that would have formed from South American boulders.
