Is desalination a viable option for fresh water supplies?

From what I’ve read, the desalination of ocean water for fresh water has been and is still being done. This is actually one of mankinds’ earliest forms of water treatment that was used in ancient times to provide fresh water for travelers on ships. Today, this process (now refered to as reverse-osmosis) is still used on ships and in many arid regions of the world where fresh water is scarce. The El Paso-Fort Bliss desalination plant is largest located right here in the U.S.
