Is deregulation in the power sector a bad idea?

Most definitely. Most electricity is generated by coal-burning power plants, which release harmful emissions such as coal ash, sulfur, and carbon dioxide. These chemicals and gasses cause, among other things, cancer, acid rain and global warming. Seeing as pollutants that have been regulated only got that way after long and bitter struggles against the power sector and its lobbyists, it’s safe to say that if the industry weren’t regulated, it would emit these substances indiscriminately. Not good for public health, let alone the environment.
