Deepwater Horizon is the deepest oil leak in U.S. history. It tapped into oil reserves below the ocean floor of unknown proportions. This is one of the reasons the leak has been so disastrous as oil could be leaking from numerous locations along the ocean floor due to the extreme pressure created by opening this reserve. The oil is 35,050 feet below the ocean floor, and the rig drilled roughly 18,000 feet before the explosion. Here is a link to a chart that shows relatively how deep that figure is:
The oil is certainly NOT 35,050 feet below the ocean floor. The well had obviously already encountered the oil at or shallower than its total depth of 18,000 ft down. There are natural sea-floor leaks from deeper water depths.
