On May 6th, 2010, following the Deepwater Horizon accident, President Obama imposed a drilling moratorium. Though th moratorium on deep water drilling was lifted in October, no new permits have been released. However, according to the Director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement – which grants deep water drilling permits – five permits are currently pending, with permission expected to be granted within “the next several weeks“.
The moratorium on shallow water drilling permits was lifted on May 28th, 2010; since June of 2010, 31 permits have been granted.
Deep-water drilling never stopped; the moratorium was on new permits. As of Feb. 2011 there were 15 deep-water projects under way in the US Gulf of Mexico.
