Dark soil is a common name for soils that are high in organic humus. Organic humus is a type of soil that retains the moisture content and helps develop a good soil structure. This soil allows organisms to feed and reproduce very effectively.
This type of soil is preferred because the organic humus can maintain a very diverse plant life.
In general, the darker the soil the more organic matter it has. Plants usually grow better in soil that is high in organic matter. So, I suppose one could say dark soil is always healthy soil. However, to investigate further look past the color and see if the soil has earthworms and other signs of healthy soil life (i.e. texture).
