is crude oil used in plastic manufacturing?

Yes, about 1.2 gallons of a 42-gallon barrel of crude oil (not quite 3% of the barrel) go to make all the plastics, synthetic rubber, chemical feedstocks etc. that we use. Significant amounts of plastics are made much more from natural gas rather than oil, including the common plastics found in grocery bags.
