You should read the nonfiction book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. The story is about a year in which her and her family fed themselves on products grown close to home or in their own garden/farm. It depicts their experience, what they learned, and what they did including recipies and strategies for farming. Part of the book also acts as a expose on the American food industry and the local food movement. Kingsolver is a skilled storyteller, so it makes it a interesting, enchanting read.
