Could we tax cigarettes enough that people would stop buying them?

The price of cigarettes has increased over the years which hasn’t stopped people one bit. Once people are addicted it will take more than price to make them stop. They will find a way to get what they want as cheaply as possible. If cigarettes are overtaxed companies will lose customers and in turn money. So the idea of taxing cigarettes so high people wouldn’t buy them isn’t a good business move. People would just bum off each other or possibly resort to stealing.

There’s a certain threshold on every product at which the legal cost is too high and people start buying it on the black market. Canada, for example, eventually raised its price to the point that contraband cigarettes became a major crime problem, like illegal drugs.
