Could we remove a dam without damaging species too much?

Dam removals are usually done because they have had a negative impact on the local ecology. Removing the dam will help encourage local plants and animals to reclaim and rehabilitate the land. The science on dam removal is not complete, but dam removals in the great northwest have helped salmon populations grow, for instance.

If you need more information, you can always visit the Clearinghouse for Dam Removal Information or you can check out the American Rivers website at, they have a report called The Ecology of Dam Removal.
