It might not survive the initial explosion due to the ash thrown up into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight. (Although it would have to be a pretty big volcanic explosion to block out the sun all over the world and not just in the area surrounding the explosion.) But once the air cleared, plant life would probably start growing again, and do pretty well. Volcanic ash is actually very good for plants and creates fertile soil.
