Could manual transportation work for most cities?

Manual transportation like bikes and walking could work for some cities for local travel, but not enough of them. In my area, my home is several miles from even any type of public transportation, let alone stores or businesses. America has been built upon the idea of suburbs – people living in communities separate from the cities. Powered transportation is required for a great majority of Americans to get to work, stores, and other necessary places. Manual transportation is the answer for some people, but most require some form of fueled transportation.
