Is cotton the best material for the environment?

Probably not. It’s natural, which is probably a good place to start, but it’s also relatively prone to pests, making (conventionally grown) cotton crops a proportionally large source of need for agricultural pesticides. Alternatives such as bamboo and hemp fabrics are slowly becoming more readily available and popular. There are doubtless some sources of organic, sustainably grown cotton which would have little negative effect on the environment.
