Although cork is a product harvested from trees, the cork industry is generally considered eco-friendly due to the sustainability of production and the easy recycling of cork products/by-products. Cork oak forests also prevent desertification are home to various endangered species.
Cork board is one of the most sustainable products around. Cork flooring or cabinetry has the potential to be an extremely environmentally safe construction material. Once a Cork Tree is 25-30 years old it can be harvested. Only the outer layer is taken from the tree (it is not killed in the process). Doing so stimulates the cork bark to grow again and can be re-harvested every 9 years or so. Definitely a great way to go. See the article in the website listed below for a detailed explanation.
