An electric current flows because of an applied electrical potential, created by moving electrons. Conductors (metals), contain electrons which will move when an electrical potential is applied to that substance. Every metal has a conductor potential. Copper has a good conductor potential, but the reason it is so widely used is because it is inexpensive. Silver is actually the best type of metal for electrical current (it has the most mobile charge), but it is far more expensive than copper, which is why it is used sparingly.
