Copper is the best type of wiring if your goal is to have a highly conductive wire. Copper has twice the electrical conductivity of aluminum and is a good heat conductor. Silver is more conductive than copper, however, copper is much more inexpensive by comparison, so it is much more widely used.
Copper is the best metal for wiring for its conductivity relative to its price and durability. Other metals such as silver and platinum, with the latter used in hydorgen fuel cells, conduct at a high coefficient but are more expensive. However in terms of carrying electrical signals, fiber optic lines have shown to outperform metal lines is all areas and have replaced copper in most long range power transmisson.
