Contemporary design may be one facet in the debate but it seems that the biggest controversy is the contracts that are being bid on to build the eco-towns. Claims have been made that by the time the homes are built they will be less carbon-neutral than their contemporaries. Apparently, some of the eco-towns were also being considered for construction in “green belt” areas where already flourishing vegetation, water and wildlife would be leveled and covered in concrete to make way for the communities. There is heavy speculation on government trying to pass the eco-towns off as progression when they are really lining their pockets.
