The science and practice of composting hasn’t changed all that much in the last few centuries. However, I would suggest that there have been different techniques or containers that have become available in the last few decades that make composting in urban environments more amenable.
There are a lot of composters out there, which might make it easier for some folks to compost. http://www.groworganic.com/browse_11_Composting.html It depends on the composter. The big thing is adding the right materials, keeping it hot enough, moist enough but not wet and turning it so that the microbes that break everything down get enough air. We built a simple compost “bin” using 3 free pallets nailed together. The other side is open to make it easier to get in and turn the pile.
